 | Ezhovo Nunnery |
Ezhovo is a small village located about 13 miles northward of Yoskar-Ola. Although, many monasteries have been built in olden times, nunneries have been seldom constructed. Ezhovo Nunnery is one of the rare. During Soviet times the Nunnery was brutally ruined, but it was recently restored and represents now of the most beautiful places in the outskirts of the capital.
The tranquil ambiance of the area permeates the Nunnery. Quite simply it can be described as a cool mix of religious paraphernalia and psychedelia. Today it is a home for over a dozen nuns. All nuns live, eat, sleep, work and study there. The building is being used as a multipurpose complex that serves as housing, kitchen and study room.
The legend of the monastery runs that times ago an old peasant found an icon cut in a stone, it was shining very brightly. On that very spot later they founded a church and then a nunnery. If you wish you may come to a "healing" spring, which is not far from the nunnery. It is believed that its water possesses some curing qualities, and it's always very clear and cold.
